20. What types of sacred objects are around the house?
None, except for a tree that belonged to the community
nearby. However, the tree died recently and fell.
21. Describe the kinds of clothing each family member owns.
Each member has only one much-repaired set of clothes. We
purchased them second hand at the market. These clothes are
cast-offs from Europe. Getu, Zenebu, and Like have a second,
much worn-out set, but these are really worn only when
washing the other clothes. They are not "public" clothes.
22. Alcohol, tobacco, and firearms: Are they available and
what family members use them?
Adults drink Tela (a homemade beer) and Araki (which is like
vodka) when we can get it. Also popular with the men is Tej (a
mead-like drink). No one smokes, but tobacco is available. We
have no guns, but they are available.
Family Food & Shelter
23. A typical breakfast consists of:
Kolo (roasted barley grains) and coffee. Injara (Ethiopian
bread) if we have it.
24. A typical lunch consists of:
We don't have lunch typically. Maybe a snack of Injara. We
also eat roasted (fried) grains--wheat or barley--when taking our coffee three times a day.
25. A typical dinner consists of:
Injara with Wat (hot spicy sauce) or maybe Dabo (a different
type of bread), porridge or Kinche (cooked cracked wheat).
26. Are you satisfied with your food?
Yes. It's good and we like it as long as we have enough.
27. Does your family rent or own your house?
Though land is still nationalized, this was formerly our
family's private land.
